IN the afternoon of that same Christmas-day, 1823,' a man walked a long time in the most deserted portion of the Boulevard de l'Hopital at Paris. This man had the appearance of some one who was looking for lodgings, and seemed to stop by preference before the most modest houses of this dilapidated part of the Faubourg Saint Marceau.
We shall see further on that this man did in fact hire a room in this isolated quarter.
