He receives a letter informing him that his son Absalom has been arrested for murdering a white man in Johannesburg. Kumalo travels to the city to support his son and discovers that his daughter is also living a life of prostitution and sin. Through his journey, Kumalo witnesses the destruction of his family and community due to the injustices of apartheid.
