Earl Derr Biggers

Earl Derr Biggers (1884-1933) was an American author best known for creating the fictional Chinese-American detective Charlie Chan. Biggers was born in Warren, Ohio, and graduated from Harvard University in 1907. He began his writing career as a journalist, but soon moved on to writing novels and plays. His first novel, Seven Keys to Baldpate, was a success and was adapted into a play and several films. He followed this success with several other novels, including The House Without a Key (1925), The Chinese Parrot (1926), and Behind That Curtain (1928). Biggers also wrote several plays, including The Agony Column (1921) and The Courage of the Commonplace (1922). He died in 1933 at the age of 49.
