The Champion by Edith Nesbit (1915)
The story is an allegory of the changing seasons. Winter, once strong and youthful, has reigned too long and must be defeated by Summer. The champion of Summer awakens and rallies little armies of flowers to fight against Winter. As Winter's power wanes, the flowers bloom and flourish, ultimately leading to the triumph of Summer. Spring, a faithful knight, leads the army of flowers and eventually lays the royal crown at Summer's feet. In a final act of devotion, Spring dies for Summer, and she mourns his loss.
