Within the Nebula by Edmond Hamilton

A group of three interstellar envoys, chosen from among the members of a vast galactic council, are tasked with preventing the imminent cosmic catastrophe caused by an enormous glowing nebula that has begun to spin with an ever‐accelerating force. The council explains that, though their civilization has mastered many astronomical challenges, nothing yet has come close to the mystery—and danger—of this vast nebula. Its increasing rotation threatens to break it apart so that its incandescent gases will scatter violently, destroying countless stars and worlds throughout the galaxy. Equipped with a specially constructed cruiser made from advanced heat‐resistant alloy, the three set out on a desperate mission. They pilot the vessel through the harsh, fiery regions near the nebula—a region where conventional ships would be instantly incinerated—to gather clues about the mysterious forces driving its spin. Nearing the nebula, they witness its immense, shifting surface of roaring flames and realize that, contrary to prior assumptions, the nebula is hollow. At its heart lies a colossal metallic planet, its smooth, gleaming surface almost otherworldly in its perfection. Upon landing on this alien world, the travelers encounter strange, amorphous creatures—beings of pulsating white flesh with shifting forms and single, dark eyes. These nebula-dwellers reveal through silent, rapid changes of shape and a telepathic exchange via a peculiar apparatus that they engineered the nebula’s rotation. In a vast underground complex beneath the planet’s surface, they learn that the nebula-creatures had once built an elaborate system of machines and cables that produced a powerful atomic ray. This ray, continuously connecting the spinning metallic world to the encircling nebula, maintained the nebula’s accelerated spin—a process they had devised as a means to force their civilization into a new phase of existence when rising heat on their planet threatened their survival. Captured and forced into the labyrinthine recesses of this hidden domain, the envoys witness scenes of eerie, automated activity, endless corridors, and cavernous halls filled with vast, intricate machines. Amidst the tension and the terror of imprisonment, they absorb the grim revelation: the rotating nebula is on a course to break apart imminently, its disintegration promising universal devastation. With only a few hours remaining before the celestial catastrophe unfolds, the trio hatches an escape plan. Displaying bold resourcefulness and unity, they clash with the alien captors—a series of desperate battles ensues through dark shafts, narrow corridors, and open caverns. In a climactic moment, while pursued by relentless, shape-shifting adversaries, the envoys manage to reach the massive cable feeding the atomic ray from a gigantic control apparatus. In a frenzied struggle using heavy, ax-like weapons, they relentlessly sever the cable. With the disabling of the ray, the driving force behind the nebula’s spin is abruptly removed. In the ensuing chaos the nebula’s blazing mass begins to collapse in on itself, its fury receding as the catastrophic process is halted. Barely escaping the collapsing nebula aboard their battered cruiser, the survivors emerge back into open space. They return to a grand assembly of the galactic council, where thousands of beings from countless star systems celebrate their narrow escape and heroic intervention. Amid the jubilant cheers and the solemn memory of what had been narrowly averted, the envoys share a final, silent look at the nebula—the vast, flickering realm of fire that once threatened to consume the universe—and, with a final gesture toward distant stars, their journey back to their respective suns begins.
