Chapter Heading by Ernest Hemingway

Chapter One of Ernest Hemingway's novel The Sun Also Rises introduces the reader to the main characters of the novel. Jake Barnes is an American expatriate living in Paris, and he is the narrator of the novel. He is joined by his friends Robert Cohn, Bill Gorton, and Mike Campbell. The group is in Spain for the annual fiesta in Pamplona. Jake and Robert Cohn are both in love with Lady Brett Ashley, a beautiful and wild British woman. The chapter follows the group as they travel to Pamplona and prepare for the fiesta. Jake and Robert Cohn have a tense conversation about Brett, and Jake reveals his feelings of jealousy and resentment towards Robert. The chapter ends with the group arriving in Pamplona and the fiesta beginning.
