The narrative is told from the perspective of Charlie Vere, who recounts his life from childhood onward. As the story opens, Charlie is a miserable eight-year-old boy at boarding school, dreading the Easter holidays because returning home means facing his cold, volatile, and emotionally distant father. Unlike his schoolmates, Charlie has no fond memories of home to anticipate and has never known a mother, believing her to be dead. His world is transformed when a warm, gentle woman named Mary arrives at the school to collect him. She introduces herself as his new mother and takes him home to Lilyfields, the family's previously gloomy and neglected estate. Under her influence, the house is brightened, the atmosphere softened, and Charlie's father Harold becomes a changed man — calmer, warmer, and more present. Charlie flourishes in this environment, experiencing for the first time the feeling of a true home and loving family. A little sister, Violet, is eventually born, deepening the household's happiness. Yet despite the apparent contentment, Charlie occasionally notices a shadow of sorrow crossing his mother's face. She is given to quiet, unexplained weeping and speaks sometimes with a veiled urgency about what would happen to Violet if she were gone. The family lives in near-total social isolation, receiving almost no visitors, which Charlie attributes to his father's past unsociable behaviour or to his mother's possibly inferior social origins. As Charlie grows into adolescence, certain unsettling incidents accumulate. His mother receives letters she is anxious to conceal. On one occasion, she arranges to have both Charlie and his father sent away from the house on trivial errands, and Charlie, returning early due to his pony casting a shoe, discovers his mother in a heated confrontation with a dishevelled, red-faced, coarse-mannered woman. His mother pleads with him to leave the room and say nothing to his father, which Charlie agrees to, assuming the visitor must be a disreputable relation his mother wishes to keep hidden. He is sworn to secrecy and complies without pressing the matter. Charlie is later apprenticed to an architect in London. Two years into his career, he receives word that his father has died suddenly of a heart attack and returns to Lilyfields. He finds his mother grief-stricken but eerily composed, sitting vigil beside the body without tears. When Charlie inquires about his father's will, he learns there is none — his father had repeatedly delayed drawing one up. On the day before the funeral, the same coarse woman Charlie encountered years earlier arrives at Lilyfields by hired carriage with luggage, demanding admittance and declaring herself to be the true Mrs Vere. Charlie attempts to block her entry, dismissing her claims as the ravings of a drunk. But when he turns to his mother for denial, she confirms the devastating truth: she and his father were never legally married. His father's lawful wife — crude, faithless, and long absent — had deserted the family twice, the second time beyond legal remedy, leaving Harold Vere in an impossible position. Mary had entered the household knowingly, with full awareness of the circumstances, choosing to devote herself to Harold and to Charlie despite having no legal standing. With no will and the estate intestate, the law awards everything to the legal wife. Mary and Violet are cast out of Lilyfields with nothing. The legal wife, triumphant and contemptuous, oversees Mary's departure, even hovering to ensure nothing is taken from the house. Charlie is offered a share of the inheritance as Harold's son but categorically refuses any association with his legal mother or claim on property that would compromise his loyalty to Mary. In the final scene, Charlie stands in the hallway of Lilyfields and delivers an impassioned declaration. He repudiates the legal wife despite her biological claim on him and affirms that Mary — the woman who gave him love, shelter, stability, and moral example — is his true mother in every sense that matters. He leaves Lilyfields with Mary and Violet, resolving to support them through his own labour and to repay in his manhood the devotion she had shown him since childhood. Though society and the law deny her the name of wife and mother, Charlie insists she holds both titles in the eyes of God and in his own heart.
