The Wonderful Adventures of Gutefundus
"The Wonderful Adventures of Gutefundus" by Frank R. Upon finding the trees, he attempts to take cuttings, but the tree, revealed to be magical, collapses into the water, taking the ducks with it. The gathered fruit is deemed cursed and discarded, exploding upon contact with water. The Bird Trees are never seen again. Gutefundus's greatest adventure involves seeking treasures guarded by a fearsome dragon in mountain caverns. After a long journey, he reaches the forest near the caverns but falls into a magical sleep for twenty years. Awakening as an old man, he learns the dragon still lives. Undeterred, he confronts the dragon, armed only with his trusty sword. In a fierce battle, he slays the dragon, making the treasures accessible to humanity. Gutefundus takes a modest share and retires, having diminished some of the world's evils, though the story acknowledges the fantastical nature of his adventures.

A great part of the world as we know it, had not then been discovered, and there were not so many people in those times as there are now. But still it was something of an undertaking to go all over the world, and do good to everybody.
