Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell

Nineteen Eighty-Four is a dystopian novel by George Orwell, first published in 1949. The novel is set in Airstrip One, formerly Great Britain, a province of the superstate Oceania, whose residents are victims of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation. The story follows Winston Smith, a man who works for the Ministry of Truth, which is responsible for propaganda and historical revisionism. His job is to rewrite history to fit the party's narrative. Winston begins to question the Party's motives and actions, and starts to rebel against the oppressive regime. He begins a forbidden love affair with Julia, a fellow worker at the Ministry of Truth. Together, they join a secret revolutionary organization called the Brotherhood, which is dedicated to overthrowing the Party. As Winston and Julia's relationship deepens, they become increasingly aware of the Party's true intentions and the consequences of their actions. In the end, Winston is captured and tortured by the Thought Police, and his fate is left unknown.
