Henry van Dyke (1852-1933) was an American author, educator, and clergyman. He was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Princeton University in 1873. He then studied at the Princeton Theological Seminary and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1879. Van Dyke was a professor of English literature at Princeton from 1899 to 1923. He wrote many books, including The Story of the Other Wise Man (1896), The Blue Flower (1902), and The First Christmas Tree (1907). He also wrote several hymns, including "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee" and "O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee." Van Dyke was a popular speaker and was active in the peace movement. He was a delegate to the League of Nations in 1920 and was awarded the Laetare Medal by the University of Notre Dame in 1921. He died in 1933 in Princeton, New Jersey.
