Greenmantle by John Buchan (1916)
The novel is set during World War I, and Hannay is sent to Germany to investigate a mysterious figure known as "Greenmantle". He is aided by Sandy Arbuthnot, a British Muslim, and Peter Pienaar, a Boer. Hannay discovers that Greenmantle is a German agent who is attempting to stir up a Muslim revolt against the British in the Middle East. He and his companions travel through Germany and Turkey, narrowly escaping capture and death several times. Eventually, they discover that Greenmantle is a false identity assumed by a German nobleman, Baron von Stumm. Hannay and his companions manage to foil the plot and save the British Empire from disaster.
