The Toy by Kris Neville (1951)

In a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has been decimated by nuclear war, the last remnants of society cling to life in underground cities. The story follows a young boy who discovers that he can communicate with a toy robot that has survived the disaster. The robot, which the boy names "Toy", possesses advanced technology and knowledge from before the war. As they navigate the ruins of civilization, Toy becomes the boy's guide and protector, helping him to survive in a harsh environment. Through their journey, the boy learns about the world before the war and the events that led to its downfall. He also begins to understand the true nature of Toy, who is more than just a machine.
