A psychiatrist, Jim Lawrence, is confronted by armed intruders who demand to see a patient named Bette Bauer, a former brilliant physicist now catatonic in a psychiatric hospital. After being knocked unconscious, Lawrence awakens aboard a spaceship, where he learns from a reptilian alien named Nestiv Illon that Bette has been kidnapped by Andsu Meero, a telepathic Vegan seeking to exploit her knowledge of a devastating weapon she had discovered before her mental breakdown. Illon explains that the Vegans are attempting to overthrow the galactic government and that they had previously driven Bette insane to extract her secrets. The Viagoni, Illon's race, aim to prevent the Vegans from obtaining this weapon. They enlist Lawrence to infiltrate the Vegan base, disguised as one of them, to rescue Bette. After undergoing a transformation to resemble a Vegan, Lawrence lands on Vega IX and navigates the vast underground base. He cleverly avoids detection by blending in with workers and eventually feigns a medical emergency to gain access to the medical facility. There, he overpowers two Vegan doctors, steals a knockout drug, and releases it into the air supply to incapacitate the base's inhabitants. With the Vegans falling asleep, Lawrence searches for Bette and finds her in a room with Meero, who is preparing to drain her mind. A confrontation ensues, and with Bette's help, Lawrence defeats Meero. They escape the base and return to the Viagoni ship, where they plan to build the annihilator weapon to prevent further Vegan aggression. The narrative explores themes of trust, the ethics of power, and the struggle against tyranny, culminating in a partnership between Lawrence and Bette as they confront the implications of her knowledge and the fate of the galaxy.
