In a future society that has evolved to be peaceful and non-violent, a criminal named Lugert emerges, threatening the stability of the community. The Council, led by Third Speaker Domnas Karson, grapples with the dilemma of how to deal with Lugert, who has taken control through fear and violence. They realize that their peaceful nature prevents them from confronting him directly. Karson proposes a radical solution: to bring a violent man from the past, someone who can act without the moral constraints that bind them. The Council contacts Dr. Lorence, who has developed a time-net capable of retrieving individuals from history. After two days, they successfully summon Jack, a tough, cold man from the 20th century, who embodies the violent traits necessary to confront Lugert. Jack is informed of his mission: to kill Lugert in exchange for gold, a currency that holds value in his time. He accepts the job, intrigued by the prospect of wealth. As he prepares for the assassination, he reflects on the pacifism of the future society, viewing them as weak for allowing Lugert to dominate them. On the day of the assassination, Jack infiltrates Lugert's headquarters, using his cunning and the element of surprise. He kills several of Lugert's henchmen with ease, demonstrating his lethal efficiency. When he finally confronts Lugert, the criminal leader attempts to negotiate for his life, offering Jack more gold and partnership. However, Jack remains resolute, driven by his agreement with the Council. After a tense exchange, Jack kills Lugert, fulfilling his mission. He returns to the Council, where he is met with gratitude and admiration. They prepare to send him back to his own time, acknowledging the debt they owe him for saving their society. As he is transported back, Jack reflects on the irony of being hailed as a hero, a title he finds amusing given his violent past. He disappears, leaving behind a society that can now return to its peaceful existence, albeit with the memory of the violence that once threatened it.
