Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909) was an American novelist and short story writer. She was born in South Berwick, Maine, and was educated at home by her father, a doctor. She began writing at an early age, and her first published work appeared in the Atlantic Monthly in 1869. She went on to become one of the most important writers of the late 19th century, and her works are considered to be among the finest examples of American regionalism. Her best-known works include The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896) and Deephaven (1877). She was also a close friend of novelist and poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Jewett died in 1909 at the age of 59.
