Tom Godwin (1915–1980) was an American science fiction author. He was born in Oklahoma and served in the US Navy during World War II. After the war, he attended the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a degree in journalism. Godwin wrote more than a dozen science fiction stories, many of which were published in the 1950s and 1960s. His most famous work is the short story "The Cold Equations," which was first published in 1954 and has since been adapted into several other media. He also wrote several novels, including The Survivors (1959) and Space Prison (1962). Godwin was a member of the Science Fiction Writers of America and was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 1955. He died in 1980 at the age of 65.
