The Survivors

The Survivors by Tom Godwin (1958)

"The Survivors" by Tom Godwin follows the harrowing journey of the spaceship Constellation, carrying eight thousand colonists fleeing from the Gern Empire. After a series of catastrophic explosions, the ship is left powerless, and the surviving officer, Lieutenant Commander Lake, informs the passengers that they are under attack. The Gerns offer a grim ultimatum: the colonists will be divided into "Acceptables," who will be taken to the planet Athena, and "Rejects," who will be abandoned on the hostile world of Ragnarok. Irene Humbolt, a mother traveling with her young son Billy, faces the terrifying reality of being classified as a Reject. As Gern guards separate families and herd the Rejects out of the ship, Irene realizes that her husband Dale is likely among the Acceptables. The Rejects are left on Ragnarok, a planet known for its lethal conditions, where survival is uncertain. As night falls, Irene grapples with fear and despair but resolves to protect her son and ensure their survival. The narrative shifts to John Prentiss, a guard on Ragnarok, who witnesses the brutal attacks of predatory creatures known as prowlers. In a tragic turn, he discovers Irene's lifeless body after a prowler attack, realizing the dire consequences of their abandonment. The story explores themes of survival, sacrifice, and the harsh realities of war, ultimately highlighting the resilience of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming odds.

First lines

For seven weeks the Constellation had been plunging through hyperspace with her eight thousand colonists; fleeing like a hunted thing with her communicators silenced and her drives moaning and thundering. Up in the control room, Irene had been told, the needles of the dials danced against the red danger lines day and night.

She lay in bed and listened to the muffled, ceaseless roar of the drives and felt the singing vibration of the hull. We should be almost safe by now, she thought. Athena is only forty days away.
