Charles Kingsley

Charles Kingsley (1819-1875) was an English clergyman, novelist, historian, and social reformer. He was born in Holne, Devon, and educated at King's College, London, and Cambridge. He was ordained in 1842 and became a curate at Eversley, Hampshire. Kingsley was a prolific writer, producing works of fiction, history, and social commentary. His most famous works include The Water-Babies (1863), Westward Ho! (1855), and The Heroes (1856). He was also a strong advocate for social reform, particularly in the areas of education and public health. Kingsley was a close friend of Charles Darwin and was an early proponent of evolutionary theory. He was also a strong supporter of the Oxford Movement, which sought to bring the Church of England closer to its Catholic roots. Kingsley died in 1875 and is buried in Eversley.
