Edward Morgan Forster (1879-1970) was an English novelist, short story writer, essayist, and librettist. He is best known for his novels A Room with a View (1908), Howards End (1910), and A Passage to India (1924). Forster was born in London, England, and educated at King's College, Cambridge. He began writing fiction in his twenties, and his first novel, Where Angels Fear to Tread, was published in 1905. He wrote six more novels, including the three mentioned above, as well as several short stories and essays. Forster was a member of the Bloomsbury Group, a circle of writers, artists, and intellectuals who met regularly in London in the early 20th century. He was also a pacifist and a homosexual, and his works often explored themes of social class, gender, and sexuality. Forster was awarded the Order of Merit in 1969 and died in Coventry, England, in 1970.
