Born 1857 in Wakefield, England. Died 1903 in London. Son of a bookseller. Educated at Owens College and later at the University of London. Worked as a teacher before turning to writing full-time. Published his first novel in 1880. Known for his novels of social realism that explored the lives of the working class and the poor.
