The story revolves around Cope, a young man who escapes from a trap set for him by his enemies. He flees to the countryside where he meets a woman named Mrs. Wychwood, who takes him in and nurses him back to health. As Cope recovers, he becomes infatuated with Mrs. Wychwood's daughter, but she is already engaged to be married. Despite this, Cope continues to pursue her, causing tension within the household. Meanwhile, a mysterious figure from Cope's past appears, threatening to expose his true identity and ruin his chances with the woman he loves.
