Hugh Lofting (1886-1947) was an English author best known for creating the character of Doctor Dolittle. He was born in Maidenhead, England, and studied civil engineering at the University of London. He served in the British Army during World War I, and his experiences in the trenches inspired him to create the character of Doctor Dolittle. His first book, The Story of Doctor Dolittle, was published in 1920 and was an immediate success. He went on to write twelve more books in the series, as well as several other works of fiction and non-fiction. He died in 1947 in Santa Barbara, California.
