The brothers were German academics and linguists who collected and published folktales from Germany and other European countries. They were born in the late 18th century: Jacob on January 4, 1785, and Wilhelm on February 24, 1786. Their father was a lawyer and their mother died when they were young. The brothers studied law at the University of Marburg but later became interested in philology and linguistics. They published several collections of folktales, including Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children's and Household Tales), which contained many classic fairy tales such as Cinderella and Snow White.
