James Shervinton is a young man from England who is determined to make his fortune in the South Seas. He sets sail for the islands of the Pacific, and soon finds himself in the midst of a strange and dangerous adventure. He is captured by cannibals, escapes from a prison camp, and is forced to join a mutiny on a trading schooner. He is shipwrecked on a deserted island, and must battle a giant octopus to survive. Along the way, he meets a beautiful Polynesian girl, and falls in love with her. In the end, James finds his fortune and returns home to England, a richer and wiser man.
