Oliver Goldsmith

Oliver Goldsmith (1730-1774) was an Irish novelist, playwright, and poet. He is best known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield (1766) and his play She Stoops to Conquer (1773). He also wrote the poem The Deserted Village (1770). Goldsmith was born in County Longford, Ireland, and studied at Trinity College, Dublin. He moved to London in 1756 and worked as a doctor, journalist, and teacher. He wrote several plays, novels, and poems, and was a popular figure in London literary circles. He was a friend of Samuel Johnson and a member of the literary club known as the "Literal Club". Goldsmith's works are known for their wit and satire, and he is considered one of the most important figures of the 18th century English literary scene. He died in London in 1774.
