The novel begins with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson being called to the home of a wealthy widow, Mrs. Marker. She has received a letter from her late husband's brother, who is living in America, asking her to sell her house and send him the proceeds. Mrs. Marker is suspicious of the letter and asks Holmes to investigate. Holmes and Watson travel to the house, which is located in a small village in Sussex. They soon discover that the house is haunted by the ghost of a woman who was murdered there many years ago. Holmes and Watson investigate the house and the surrounding area, and eventually uncover a sinister plot involving a missing will, a secret marriage, and a mysterious stranger. In the end, Holmes and Watson are able to solve the mystery and bring justice to the wronged parties. The novel is a classic example of the detective genre, and is a must-read for any fan of Sherlock Holmes.
