Stephen Marlowe

Stephen Marlowe (born Milton Lesser, April 29, 1928 – May 22, 2008) was an American author of crime fiction, science fiction, and other genres. He is best known for his long-running series of detective novels featuring private investigator Chester Drum. Marlowe was born in New York City and raised in the Bronx. He attended City College of New York, where he studied journalism and creative writing. After college, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Marlowe's first novel, The Second Longest Night, was published in 1955. He went on to write more than 50 novels, including the Chester Drum series, which began with The Second Longest Night and ran for 20 books. He also wrote science fiction, westerns, and other genres. Marlowe was a member of the Mystery Writers of America and the Science Fiction Writers of America. He was nominated for the Edgar Award for Best Novel in 1959 for The Second Longest Night. He died in 2008 at the age of 80.
