The novel follows the story of Walter Hartright, a young drawing teacher who is hired to teach two young ladies in Cumberland. On his way to his new job, he encounters a mysterious woman dressed in white, who appears to be in distress. He helps her, but she disappears without a trace. Once he arrives at his new job, he discovers that the two young ladies he is to teach are the daughters of the woman he encountered on the road. He soon finds himself in the middle of a strange mystery involving a secret society, a missing will, and a mysterious woman in white. Walter must use his wits and courage to unravel the mystery and save the woman in white from a terrible fate. Along the way, he discovers secrets about his own past and the truth about the woman in white.
