William W. Stuart

William W. Stuart is a professor of history at the University of South Carolina. He is the author of several books on the history of the American South, including The Rise and Fall of the Plantation South (2006), The Southern Tradition: The Achievement and Limitations of an American Conservatism (1994), and The Politics of Slavery: Fiery National Debates Fueled by the Slave Economy (2001). He has also written extensively on the history of the Civil War and Reconstruction, and his most recent book is The Confederate Nation: 1861-1865 (2008). He has been a visiting professor at the University of Virginia, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Georgia. He is a member of the Society of Civil War Historians and the Southern Historical Association.
