Clarence Darrow (1857-1938) was an American lawyer and civil liberties advocate. He was one of the most prominent lawyers of the early 20th century, and is best known for his defense of John T. Scopes in the famous Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925. He was also a prominent opponent of capital punishment, and argued for the rights of labor unions and civil rights. He wrote several books, including The Story of My Life (1932) and Crime: Its Cause and Treatment (1922). He was a member of the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
