Mary E. Wilkins

Mary E. Wilkins (1852-1930) was an American author of short stories and novels. She was born in Randolph, Massachusetts and grew up in a rural New England setting, which was the inspiration for much of her work. Wilkins wrote about the lives of ordinary people in small towns and villages, often focusing on the struggles of women in a male-dominated society. Her works include A Humble Romance and Other Stories (1887), A New England Nun and Other Stories (1891), and Pembroke (1894). She was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and was the first woman to receive the Howells Medal for Fiction.
