Born in 1876 on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in Dakota Territory, Zitkála-Šá was a writer, musician, and activist who advocated for Native American rights and women's suffrage. She attended boarding schools where she was forced to abandon her native language and culture, but later became a prominent figure in the Indian Rights Movement.
