John Newton (1725–1807) was an English Anglican clergyman and former slave ship captain who became a prominent abolitionist. He is best known for writing the hymn "Amazing Grace." After a dramatic conversion experience, he left the slave trade and eventually became a minister. Newton's later years were dedicated to advocating against slavery and supporting the abolitionist movement.
