León Tolstói (1828-1910) was a Russian novelist, essayist, playwright, and philosopher. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time and is best known for his novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Tolstói was born into a wealthy aristocratic family in 1828 in the Russian Empire. He studied law and oriental languages at Kazan University, but left without graduating. He then joined the army and served in the Crimean War, where he was exposed to the horrors of war. Tolstói's literary career began in the 1850s, and he quickly gained fame for his works. He wrote several novels, short stories, plays, and essays, and his works often explored themes of morality, faith, and social justice. He was also a vocal critic of the Russian government and its policies. Tolstói's later years were marked by a spiritual crisis, and he renounced his wealth and title in order to pursue a more ascetic lifestyle. He died in 1910 at the age of 82.
