Mary Austin (1868–1934) was an American writer known for her works about the American Southwest. Born in Illinois, she moved to California and became deeply influenced by the desert landscape and Native American cultures. Her most famous work, "The Land of Little Rain" (1903), is a collection of essays celebrating the beauty and harshness of the desert environment. Austin was also an advocate for environmental conservation and women's rights.
