He was one of the most successful playwrights of the late Victorian era in London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day. His flamboyant dress and glittering conversation earned him the nickname "The Great Oscar". He was imprisoned for two years for gross indecency with other men, and upon his release, he left England and died in Paris. His works have been widely celebrated for their wit, and his legacy continues to influence writers and thinkers today.
