Thomas Carlyle

Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was a Scottish philosopher, historian, and essayist. He is best known for his works on the French Revolution, The French Revolution: A History (1837) and The History of Friedrich II of Prussia (1858-1865). He was also a major influence on 19th century thought, particularly in the areas of history, economics, and literature. He was a major proponent of the idea of the "Great Man" theory of history, which held that history was shaped by the actions of great individuals. He was also a strong advocate of social reform, and his works often focused on the plight of the working class. He was a major influence on the development of modern sociology and economics.
