Kate Douglas Wiggin

Douglas Wiggin (1856-1923) was an American author and educator best known for her children's books, including Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm and The Birds' Christmas Carol. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating, she taught at a private school in Philadelphia and then at the Philadelphia Normal School. She wrote her first book, The Story of Patsy, in 1877. Wiggin wrote several books for children, including The Story of Waitstill Baxter, The Old Peabody Pew, and The Village Watch-Tower. She also wrote several novels for adults, including The Old Garden and The Story of a Bad Boy. She was a member of the Society of American Authors and the Authors' League of America. Wiggin was an advocate for children's rights and education, and she was a founding member of the National Child Labor Committee. She was also a member of the National Education Association and the National Congress of Mothers. She was a strong supporter of the suffrage movement and was a member of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Wiggin died in 1923 in New York City.
