Mary Baker Eddy

Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) was an American religious leader and author who founded the Christian Science movement. She was born Mary Morse Baker in Bow, New Hampshire, and was raised in a strict Calvinist home. She married George Washington Glover in 1843, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1873. Eddy was a prolific writer and published several books, including Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (1875), which became the central text of the Christian Science movement. She also founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, in 1879, and established the Christian Science Publishing Society in 1892. Eddy was a controversial figure in her time, and her teachings were often met with criticism from both religious and scientific circles. Despite this, her influence on the development of modern spiritualism and alternative medicine has been profound. She died in 1910 at the age of 89.
