Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) was a Greek-born writer, journalist, and teacher who is best known for his books about Japan, where he lived for the last decade of his life. He was born in Greece to a Greek mother and an Irish father, and was raised in Dublin, Ireland. He moved to the United States in 1869, where he worked as a newspaper reporter and wrote several books about the American South. In 1890, he moved to Japan, where he taught English and wrote extensively about Japanese culture and folklore. His books, such as Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things (1904) and Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan (1894), are still widely read today.
