Bertrand Arthur William Russell (1872-1970) was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, and social critic. He was one of the founders of analytic philosophy and one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century. He is best known for his work on the foundations of mathematics, the theory of logical atomism, and his advocacy of social reform. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950. He wrote more than 70 books, including The Problems of Philosophy (1912), The Analysis of Mind (1921), and A History of Western Philosophy (1945). He was a prominent anti-war activist and a vocal critic of nuclear weapons.
