Cushing was an American anthropologist and ethnographer born in 1857. He studied at Harvard University and later became a member of the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of Ethnology. In 1886, he joined the Hemenway Southwestern Archaeological Expedition to Arizona and New Mexico. Cushing is best known for his work on Zuni culture and his book "Zuni: The Strange People of the Southwest". He died in 1900 at the age of 43 due to complications from a lung disease.
