Stephen Crane (1871-1900) was an American novelist, poet, and short story writer. He is best known for his novel The Red Badge of Courage (1895), which is widely considered to be one of the most influential works of American literature. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in a family of writers and journalists. He attended Lafayette College and Syracuse University, but dropped out of both schools. He began writing stories and poems while working as a newspaper reporter in New York City. His first novel, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets (1893), was published anonymously and was not well-received. However, his second novel, The Red Badge of Courage, was a critical and commercial success. He went on to write several more novels, including The Third Violet (1897) and The Open Boat (1898). He also wrote numerous short stories, poems, and plays. He died in Germany in 1900 at the age of 28.
