Born in 1866 in Michigan to a French-Canadian father and an American mother. Raised in a family of modest means, she was largely self-educated. Her early life was marked by poverty and hardship. She became involved with the anarchist movement in her late teens and remained committed to its principles until her death in 1912 from typhoid fever at age 45.
