José María de Pereda y Sánchez de Castro (1833–1906) was a Spanish realist novelist and playwright. He was born in Santander, Cantabria, and studied law in Madrid. He was a member of the Royal Spanish Academy and a professor of literature at the University of Madrid. Pereda is best known for his novel Sotileza (1884), which is considered a classic of Spanish literature. He also wrote several plays, including La casa de los linajes (1876) and El caballero de Olmedo (1878). His works often focus on the customs and traditions of rural Spain, and he is credited with helping to revive the genre of the regional novel.
