Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was an Indian poet, novelist, musician, playwright, and painter. He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. He is considered one of the greatest literary figures of modern India. Tagore wrote over 2,000 songs, including the national anthem of India, and wrote more than 50 books of poetry, fiction, and essays. He was also a leader in the Indian independence movement, advocating for the rights of the poor and oppressed. He was a strong advocate of education and founded the Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal.
